One of my favorite films is Serendipity, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The two characters meet at Bloomingdales and then share a dessert at Serendipity III. Kate’s character says she likes the place because of the name. Her definition of Serendipity is a fortunate accident. I prefer, unexpected good. Today I experienced serendipity at camp
During the meeting portion of camp I shared the quotation from Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nothing great in life was every achieved without enthusiasm.” I followed that with, “enthusiasm is contagious, infect someone today.” Well, a young boy’s effort today infected many. He was clearly working hard and approaching his limit during the 10x110s portion of the workout. This part of the workout requires the runners to run fast for 110 yards, take a short rest and repeat. Before #9, he kept repeating, “I can do this, I can do this.” While running, giving his all, he said it again, “I can do this!” He then reached for his aide, Emily’s, hand and she helped him finish #9. With a white face, perspiration and determination he did do it as well as #10. I am in tears as I write this. While trying to change lives in a positive way, one mile at a time, I found my own life being greatly impacted; he infected me with his enthusiasm.
Surprise – Happy Wednesday
