The Midwest Distance GALA is tonight at Benedictine University. The GALA began in 2005 with the hope of giving middle distance runners the opportunity to run fast. Rabbits lead the first half of the race to ensure fast paces. I have had the opportunity to be a rabbit at the GALA 6 times and will do so once again tonight in the second section of the mile at 8:28 p.m. and then again in the fastest section of the mile at 9:08 p.m. Many athletes from the Championship Training Academy have participated in the GALA. This year Jack Driggs will run the mile against athletes from 10 different states, including Texas and New Jersey. In the freshman mile, Nathan Mroz, Alec Bruns, and Kyle Mattes will compete. Nathan has the 3rd fastest seed time. Competing in the 5000 meter run will be Scott Milling, PJ Crowley, Alex Baughman and Zach Herrera. Although they are not in the Training Academy, Elmhurst’s Michelle Frigo and Emma Fisher will also race tonight. Michelle will race 800 meters and is seeded second. Emma Fisher will run the mile and seeking to improve her PR and has a chance to break the 5:00 minute barrier.
